Not long after Christine Hassler, 33 years old, of Los Angeles landed a prestigiousand lucrativejob as a Hollywood agent, she found herself arriving at work with knots in her stomach and counting the minutes until the weekend.

‘I didn’t like the job, and I didn’t like the person I was becoming while doing it — stressed out, irritableand unmotivated,’she says.

Health Care in the US

Health care in the US is well-known but very expensive. Paying the doctor’s bill after a major illness or accident can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In the US, a person’s company, not the government, pays for health insurance.

Employers have contracts with insurance companies, which pay for all or part of employees’ doctors’ bills.

The amount that the insurance company will pay out to a patient differs wildly. It all depends on what insurance the employer pays. The less the boss pays to the insurance company, the more the employee has to pay the hospital each time he or she gets sick. In 2004, the average worker paid an extra US$558 a year, according to a San Francisco report.

The system also means many Americans fall through the cracks （遭遗漏）. In 2004, only 61 per cent of the population received health insurance through their employers, according to the report. The unemployed, self-employed, part-time workers and graduated students with no jobs were not included.

Most US university students have a gap between their last day of school and their first day on the job. Often, they are no longer protected by their parents’ insurance because they are now considered independent adults. They also cannot buy university health insurance because they are no longer students.

Another group that falls through the gap of the US system is international students. All are required to have health insurance and cannot begin their classes without it. But exact policies （保险单） differ from school to school.

Most universities work with health insurance companies and sell their own standard plan for students. Often, buying the school plan is required, but luckily it’s also cheaper than buying direct from the insurance company.

16 In the US, a person’s company buys him or her health insurance

ARightB Wrong C Not mentioned

17 All employees in the US have the same kind of health insurance.

ARightB Wrong C Not mentioned

18 In 2004, most of the unemployed in the US were women.

ARight BWrong C Not mentioned

19 In the US, graduated students with no jobs can buy university health insurance

ARightB Wrong C Not mentioned

20 All international students in the US have to buy health insurance

ARightB Wrong C Not mentioned

21 The international students in the US work harder than the American students

22 The health care system_ in the US takes care of everyone in the country.

Too Late to Regret it

When I was a junior, I met a second-year student in my department. He wasn’t tall or good-looking, but he was very nice, attractive and athletic. He had something that I admired very much. He was natural, warm, and sincere.

I disregarded （不顾） my parents’ disapproval. We were very happy together. He picked me up from my dorm every morning, and after class we would sit alongside the stream that ran through campus, or sunbathe （晒太阳） on the lawn. At night he would walk me back to my dorm. He came from a poor family, but in order to make me happy, he borrowed money from his friend to buy presents and meals for me. Our fellow students looked up to him as a role model, and the girls envied （妒忌） me. He wasn’t a local, but wanted to stay here after graduation. I thought we had a future together.

However, when I got a part-time job during the summer vacation, people began giving me a lot of pressure, saying that a pretty, intelligent girl like me should find a better guy to spend time with. This was also what my family thought. He spent the summer in his hometown, so I was all by myself. When he got back, I began finding fault with him. But his big heart and warmth soon drove all unpleasant thoughts away. However, I had no idea how badly I had hurt him and that things would get worse.

I had a good part4ime job off campus that paid pretty well. With my good performance at school, I also got admission to graduate school at one of China’s best universities. He, on the other hand, did not do so well at school or at work. I had to worry about his living expenses, job and scores.

Almost all my colleagues and friends advised me to break up with him. Then we had a quarrel last June. He was in great pain, and my cold words and bad moods started turning him away.

Graduation time was drawing near, and he said he wanted to go back to his hometown. He said that he couldn’t put up with me anymore. I was shocked and looked at him in despair.

True love happens only once, but I found it out too late.

36 When did the author fall in love with the boy?

AWhen she was a junior.

BAfter she had a quarrel with him.

CWhen she was a second-year student.

DAfter she found a part-time job.

37 What did he do to make her happy?

AHe studied much harder.

BHe often took her for a ride.

CHe often bought her presents and meals.

DHe always endured her insults.

38 Who advised her to break up with him?

AHis parents.

BHer teachers.

Breaking the News about Your Diagnosis

1When I was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly a year ago, I found myself at a loss for words at first. Over time, however, I developed some pointers （点子）, which I hope will help others.

2During the first few weeks of emotional “aftershocks” （余悸） from the diagnosis, I found myself unable to utter the word “cancer”. Still, I wanted to share the news with my relatives and friends who already knew that I’d had a biopsy （活检） and were anxiously awaiting my telephone call. I did the best I could, which is all anyone can do in this situation. When I called them, I said, “What we feared has happened.” They immediately knew what I meant.

3Nearly a year after my diagnosis, I find myself more comfortable telling people “I was diagnosed with cancer” instead of saying “I have cancer.” On some deep level, I don’t want to “own” this illness. Choose language that suits you when you share your new. And keep in mind that there is no one “right” way of doing this.

4Most people, after hearing your announcement, will be curious about the next step. They may wonder if you will be undergoing radiation therapy （诊疗） and/or chemotherapy （化疗）. They may wonder where and when you will have surgery. Answer their questions as best you can, but keep in mind that “I don’t know right now” or “I’m still in too much shock to think about that” are good answers.

5Wait until the initial wave of strong emotions has passed before telling the children in your life. Don’t overwhelm （使不知所措） very young children with too much information. Assure them that, even if you will be in the hospital for a while, they will see you every day and they will be cared for. Older children may already fear the word “cancer”, so be prepared to reassure them. Emphasize the positive steps that doctors will be taking to treat your illness.

23 Paragraph 2.

24 Paragraph 3.

25 Paragraph 4.

26 Paragraph 5.

ABreak the news as calmly as possible to children

BBreak the news at your own pace

CShare the good news with your friends

DChoose language that suits you

EFollow your doctor’s advice

FBe prepared for people’s curiosity

27 You can break the news about your diagnosis without saying.

28 When breaking the news about your diagnosis, you can have.

29 After hearing about your diagnosis, people will ask questions.

30 Very young children won’t feel comfortable.

Ayour own choice of words

Bthe word “cancer”

Cthe positive steps

Dabout the next step

Eon too many answers

Fwith too much information

Not all sleep is the same every night. We experience some deep, quiet sleep and some active sleep, which is when dreams happen. You might think sleepwalking would happen during active sleep, but a person isn’t physically active during active sleep. Sleepwalking usually happens in the first few hours of sleep in the stage called slow-wave or deep sleep.

Not all sleepwalkers actually walk. Some simply sit up or stand in bed or act like they’re awake when in fact, they’re asleep! Most, however, do get up and move around for a few seconds or for as long as half an hour.

Sleepwalkers’ eyes are open, but they don’t see the same way they do when they’re awake and often think they’re in different rooms of the house or different places altogether’. Sleepwalkers tend to go back to bed on their own and they won’t remember it in the morning.

Researchers estimate that about 15% of kids sleepwalk regularly. Sleepwalking may run in families （在家族中世代相传） and sometimes occurs when a person is sick, has a fever, is not getting enough sleep, or is stressed （紧张）.

If sleepwalking occurs frequently, every night or so, it’s a good idea for your mom or dad to take you to see your doctor. But occasional sleepwalking generally isn’t something to worry about, although it may look funny or even scary （骇人的） for the people who see a sleepwalker in action.

Although occasional sleepwalking isn’t a big deal, it’s important, of course, that the person is kept safe. Precautions （预防措施） should be taken so the person is less likely to fall down, run into something, or walk out the front door while sleepwalking.

31 When does sleepwalking usually occur?

ADuring active sleep,

BDuring deep sleep.

CIn the daytime.

DIn the early morning.

32 What most sleepwalkers do is

Asimply sit up.

Bsimply stand in bed.

Cget up and walk for some time

Dget up and walk for hours

33 Sleepwalkers usually go back to bed

Aafter waking up.

Bafter being woken up.

Cwith the help of others.

Dby themselves.

34 You’d better go and see a doctor if you

Asee a sleepwalker in action.

Bnever sleepwalk,

Csleepwalk frequently.

Dsleepwalk occasionally

35 Measures should be taken to

Akeep sleepwalkers safe.

Bprevent people from sleepwalking

Is the Tie a Necessity?

Ties, or neckties, have been a symbol of politeness and elegance in Britain for centuries. But the casual Prime Minister Tony Blair has problems with them. Reports suggest that even the civil servants may stop wearing ties. So, are the famously formal British really going to abandon the neckties?

Maybe. Last week, the UK’s Cabinet Secretary Andrew Turnbull openly welcomed a tieless era. He hinted that civil servants would soon be tree of the costliest 12 inches of fabric that most men ever buy in their lives.

In fact, Blair showed this attitude when he had his first guests to a cocktail party. Many of them were celebrities （知名人士） without ties, which would have been unimaginable even in the recent past.

For some more conservative British, the tie is a must for proper appearance. Earlier, Labor leader Jim Callaghan said he would have died rather than have his children seen in public without a tie. For people like Callaghan, the tile was a sign of being complete, of showing respect. Men were supposed to wear a tie when going to church, to work in the office, to a party – almost every social occasion.

But today, people have begun to accept a casual style even for formal occasions.

The origin of the tie is tricky. It started as something called simply a “band”. The term could mean anything around a man’s neck. It appeared in finer ways in the 1630s. Frenchmen showed a love of this particular fashion statement. Their neckwear （颈饰）impressed Charles II, the king of England who was exiled（流放）to France at that time. When he returned to England in 1660, he brought this new fashion item along with him.

It wasn’t, however, until the late 18th century that fancy young men introduced a more colorful, flowing piece of cloth that eventually became known as the tie. Then, clubs military institutions and schools began to use colored and patterned ties to indicate the wearer’s membership in the late 19th century. After that, the tie became a necessary item of clothing for British gentlemen.

But now, even gentlemen are getting tired of ties. Anyway, the day feels a bit easier when you wake up without having to decide which tie suits you and your mood.

31 The tie symbolizes all of the following except

A respect

B elegance

C politeness

D democracy

32 Why does Blair sometimes show up in a formal event without a tie?

A Because he wants to make a show,

B Because he wants to attract attention.

C Because ties are costly.

D Because he wants to live in a casual way.

33 Which of the following is NOT a social occasion?

A Going to church.

B Going to work in the office.

C Staying at home.

D Going to a party.

34 Who brought the Frenchmen’s neckwear to Britain?

A Tony Blair.

B Charles ll.

C Jim Callaghan.

D Andrew Turnbull.

35 When did British gentlemen begin to wear ties regularly?

A After the late 19th century.

B In the 1630s.

C In 1660.

D In the late 18th century.

TV Game Shows

One of the most fascinating things about television is the size of the audience. A novel can be on the “best seller” lists with a sale of fewer than 100,000 copies, but a popular TV show might have 70 million TV viewers. TV can make anything or anyone well-known overnight.

This is the principle behind “quiz” or “game” shows, which put ordinary people on TV to play a game for prizes and money. A quiz show can make anyone a star, and it can give away thousands of dollars in the U.S. and almost everyone watched them. Charles Van Doren, an English instructor, became rich and famous after winning money on several shows. He even had a career as a television personality. But one of the losers proved that Charles Van Doren was cheating. It turned out that the show’s producers who were pulling the strings, gave the answers to the most popular contestants beforehand. Why? Because if the audience didn’t like the person who won the game, they turned the show off. The result of this cheating was a huge scandal. Based on his story, a movie under the title “Quiz Show” is on 40 years later.

Charles Van Doren is no longer involved with TV. But game shows are still here, though they aren’t taken as seriously. In fact, some of them try to be as ridiculous as possible. There are shows that send strangers on vacation trips together, or that try to cause newly-married couples to fight on TV, or that punish losers by humiliation them. The entertainment now is to see what people will do just to be on TV. People still win money, but the real prize is to be in front of an audience of millions.

1. TV can make a beggar world-famous overnight.

A. Right

B. Wrong

C. Not mentioned

5. The huge scandal of cheating in TV game shows was not exposed until 40 years later in the movie “Quiz Show”.

Football

Football is， I suppose， the most popular game in England： one has only to go to one of the important matches to see this. Rich and poor， young and old， one can see them all there， shouting and cheering for one side or the other.

One of the most surprising things about football in England to a stranger is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He has photographs of them and knows the results of a large number of matches. He will tell you， with a great air of authority， who he expects will win such and such a match， and his opinion is usually as valuable as that of men three or four times his age.

Most schools in England take football seriously – much more seriously than nearly all European schools， where lessons are all-important （至关重要的）， and games left for private arrangements. In England， it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy’s mind with facts in a classroom； education also means character training； and one of the best ways of training character is by means of games， especially team games， where the boy has to learn to work with others for his team， instead of working selfishly （自私地） for himself alone. The school therefore arranges games and matches for its pupils Football is a good team game， it is good exercise for the body， it needs skill and a quick brain， it is popular and it is cheap： as a result， it is the school’s favorite game in the winter.

1.In England football is a game enjoyed

A only by young people.

B only by rich people.

C only by boys.

D by people of all ages and classes.

2.A stranger in England will be surprised to find that in that country

A people have little knowledge of football.

B girls are more interested in football than boys.

C even small boys know a lot about football.

D children are not interested in football at all.

3.There is a great difference between schools in England and those in Europe in that

A European schools take football seriously.

B European schools often arrange football matches for their pupils.

C schools in England care little about lessons.

D schools in England believe character training to be part of education.

4.According to the passage， which of the following is NOT true of the football game？

A It makes people selfish.

B It encourages cooperation.

C It is good for health.

D It is not expensive.

5.What is the author’s attitude towards the football game in England？

A Critical.

B Positive.

C Negative.

D Doubtful.

e.g.To bump a thread on an internet forum is to post a reply in order to raise the thread’s profile by returning it to the top of the list of active threads. This is also called “necroposting”。

e.g.Lurking is an activity performed on Internet Forums or Chat rooms that involves wandering the website, reading posts and never actually posting anything。

From birth, your child is a sensory sponge, taking in the world with the five senses of vision, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. And the quality of these experiences has a deep effect on the development of a baby’s brain. But while you may feel obligated to constantly entertain your child or buy complicated toys that seemingly guarantee rich sensory experiences, experts say that simple, thoughtful, consistent interaction is all a child needs to develop his senses and mind.

Joshua Sparrow, MD, a psychiatry professor at Harvard Medical School and co-author, with parenting authority T. Berry Brazelton, of Touchpoints—Birth to Three, recommends that parents help their child discover the world through his senses “not by necessarily doing a whole lot but by following their lead. [With a] four-month old who is looking to reach, you might move the object a little closer to [him] when [he] looks like [he's] going to give up.” You can also go easy on buying electronic toys with a lot of bells and whistles (and expensive price tags to boot). Experts say this kind of toy tends to be one-way interactive, with the toy “talking” at the child.

Instead, take advantage of natural opportunities to sharpen your child’s senses and brain:

1. Go for a walk.

For many moms, walks are a great way to soothe a baby and a gentle way to get in shape after delivery. But they’re also an excellent opportunity to help your child engage her senses. For instance, if you stop to smell the roses on your stroll, your baby will not only understand that flower’s scent, but she can also touch the petals (look for thorns!), see the pretty colors, and hear your description of what you’re doing.

2. Do the laundry.

It may be monotonous for you, but for your child, the laundry is a sensory adventure. “A toddler helping fold laundry fresh from the dryer is using her senses to process information, and we help them understand that information when we talk about the experiences. ‘Aren’t these towels warm? Don’t your PJs smell good? Feel how soft this sweater is!’” suggests Jeff Johnson, founder of the Iowa-based Explorations Early Learning, LLC and author of Babies in The Rain: Promoting Play, Exploration, and Discovery with Infants and Toddlers.

3. Make morning routines more meaningful.

Clothing or feeding your child (or having them do it on their own, depending on his age) clearly involves senses like touch, seeing, taste, and smell. But you can add a conversation to involve the sense of hearing in these everyday rituals. For instance, serve a crispy rice cereal. Have your child listen to the crackling, taste the cereal, learn the word “Pop!” and allow him to add any other comments (through expressions, sounds, or words, again, depending on his age). Ask him what color shirt he wants to wear, if he wants apple juice or milk and why, how different fabrics feel against his skin or how creamed corn tastes. Says Johnson, “That running commentary while eating, dressing, grocery shopping, driving, and doing all the mundane things that are part of daily life is the best way to help kids make sense of their senses. It also builds language skills and interpersonal bonds.”

4. Put on a show.

While you don’t have to entertain kids nonstop, engaging them in some parent-child musical theatre can be fun—and beneficial. Says Sparrow, “The idea is [to focus on] activities that involve this relationship with another human being as the source of the stimulation.” Your voice can be more interesting to your baby than, say, the robotic tones of a mobile. “Babies’ hearing is set up so they attend preferentially to sounds within the human range,” says Sparrow. Plus, the visual of your improve acting just may cause them to join in. Think of your yourself as the best mobile toy ever—you can be funny, soothing, fast, slow, loud, quiet, depending on what your child’s face and body language is telling you.

5. Take your time.

Even following these ideas isn’t going to make your kid into a “super kid”. Every child will develop at an individual rate, as long as she’s not severely neglected. “The goal is not to move the kid to the next developmental stage,” says Sparrow. “For sensory or motor development, don’t be in a rush.” (That’s not to say kids can’t have difficulties: Johnson says signs of possible problems include an infant’s failure to track objects with his eyes by the time he’s four months old, a reluctance to be cuddled, or a lack of response to your voice or to loud noises. In cases like these, see your pediatrician right away.)

6. Allow TV once in a while.

If you need some time to yourself, you won’t be guilty of neglecting your child or doing any long-term harm if you sit them in front of the boob tube for half an hour. “I think it’s important for parents to know that it’s okay if they get a break to take care of themselves,” says Sparrow. But he also urges moderation: the more time your child spends in front of Big Bird, the less time she’s spending interacting with you and the rest of the world.

7. Don’t overdo it.

When helping your child explore the environment, whether through walks, conversation, or the occasional toy, you’ll want to avoid overwhelming him (you’ll be able to tell if you are by his reactions). In order to avoid one-sided sensory overload or overstimulation, focus on natural interaction and simple toys like wooden blocks, says Johnson. “I would not waste money on a mobile. The truth is that most infant rooms are probably visually over-stimulating. We cram our homes with so much visual clutter that babies have a hard time picking out a place to focus.”

circusee：circus+see
笑而不语：smilence=smile+silence
偷菜：vegeteal=vegetable+steal
Emotionormal=emotion+normal
躲猫猫：suihide=suicide+hide

US President Barack Obama applauds as first lady Michelle Obama speaks at an International Women’s Day event at the White House in Washington March 8, 2010.(Agencies)

President Barack Obamawarned on Monday that women in America still faced unfairness and hardship, as he vowed to fight for gender equalityat a White House reception on International Women’s Day.

“I didn’t run for president so that the dreams of our daughters could be deferred or denied,” Obama said.

“I didn’t run for president to see inequality and injustice persist in our time.”

Obama was joined by his wife First Lady Michelle Obama, the first female secretary of state Madeleine Albright, and his rival-turned-ally and current top US diplomat Hillary Clinton at an event in the East Room of the White House.

“Even as we reflect on the hope of our history, we must also face squarelythe reality of the present — a reality marked by unfairness, marked by hardship for too many women in America,” Obama said.

“I ran for president to put the same rights, the same opportunities, the same dreams within the reach for our daughters and our sons alike.”

The president also praised Clinton and US ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice for making the alleviation of suffering of women a priority in US foreign policy, including lifting restrictions on access to family planning.

Michelle Obama introduced her husband with a joke: “I get to speak first while he stands and watches. I love this,” she said to laughter.

“Look at me adoringly,” she told her husband.

“I can do that,” the president quipped.

“With sincerity,” she said, sparking loud laughs.

Vocabulary:

squarely：directly; without evasion; in a straight or straightforward manner（直截了当地；毫不含糊地）

quip：to make a quick and clever remark（讲俏皮话，打趣）
