Back when you were plotting your online profile, the delete key and edit function bailed you out of blunders before posting to the cyber-nation. Even voicemail grants us the beloved # button to erase verbal mistakes and botched witticisms. But once in the real-time arena of dating in person, though, what’s to keep you [...]

Back when you were plotting your online profile, the delete key and edit function bailed you out of blunders before posting to the cyber-nation. Even voicemail grants us the beloved # button to erase verbal mistakes and botched witticisms. But once in the real-time arena of dating in person, though, what’s to keep you from shoving a shoe in your mouth and blowing the whole affair? Like your fairy godmother, consider us on your shoulder for that first date, reminding you not to step into the usual bachelor potholes. Specifically, we’ll help you watch out for these 10 common dating pitfalls that spoil chances of an Act II and render your mojo limp:

　　1. Scale back your time of possession.

In football, the team that holds the ball for long stretches on offense invariably wins the game. In dating, forget football Sunday. Instead of towering over the chitchat, shelve the Me, Me, Me and talk less. Unlike the star of a rowdy cable news roundtable, defer and listen to your guest. In the end, you’ll learn more and foul up less.

　　2. Offload unsportsmanlike conduct.

Unless the theme of the date is to watch the big game around a bucket of hot wings, don’t schedule a first meeting at the same time as a crucial sporting event. No lady appreciates one eye on her and the other on the bar TV scanning for the Cubs score.

　　3. Put Mr. Popularity on ice.

One of the terms of the social contract we call a date is that while we’re both here, this is the most important thing happening. Pressing business and pet emergencies aside, silence your cell phone during a first date. Flaunting your supposed importance as a social butterfly is downright rude, overshadowed only by the ultimate cad who flirts with a stranger while his date powders her nose.

　　4. Lay off any leering looks.

No matter how well Pilates has sculpted her backside or how devilishly low-cut her neckline, be different… lock your gaze above the neck line for full iris-to-iris contact. She’ll be impressed.

　　5. Enter a no-bragging zone.

Your Wall Street credentials and private jet may have been relevant info online, but boasting about your bank account in person is hardly attractive. If you are well-off, the confident tone, classic watch, and Italian shoes will wordlessly communicate that you are a blue-chip investment.

　　6. Steer clear of taboo topics.

Life lessons, exes, or your philosophical stance on the late Jacques Derrida (Overblown fraud or grand deconstructionist? Discuss.) enliven conversation and aid in weeding out potential mates with incongruent values. However, a first date is not couples’ counseling or a tell-all recap of your romantic résumé. This is not the forum for discussing recent exes or any past relationship failures that involve heartache, baggage, or other drama.

　　7. Don’t get too familiar.

No matter how well the date is faring (rampant hand-holding, under-the-table canoodling), projecting a conjoined future is a terrible no-no. Hints of shared summer-house rentals, baby naming, or family references (“Oh, Mother is a card. You’ll meet her soon.”) are super-creepy at this stage.

　　8. Don’t over-indulge your pop-culture passions.

Must every semi-witty comment and dash of banter contain a pop-culture reference? Lightly sprinkle your cultural quotient, yes, but too many Simpsons jokes and too deep a knowledge of Star Wars: Episode I is head-shakingly dull.

　　9. Avoid the line-item audit.

Obsessing over the price of dinner, before, during, or afterward either paints you as a worrywart who isn’t enjoying the date — or a cheapskate who isn’t enjoying the date. The host generally pays, and no one needs to hear you gripe about appetizer prices or shrimp count.

　　10. Save the souvenir photos for later.

Despite advances in technology, treating your camera phone like the boardwalk kiosk photo-booth is premature, and more apt for a third date. Even worse, it gives the sense that you’re “collecting” photos of all your victims/dates. Seductive conversation trumps snapshots any day… and any night.

由《杜拉拉升职记》改编的同名电影和话剧(the film and play adapted based on the novel of the same title)也回过来使原书受到热捧(receive heated extolling)，电视台也在推波助澜(add fuel to the flame)，推出“寻找职场杜拉拉”(looking for living Lala’s in employment)的电视节目，将杜拉拉系列推向一个新的高潮(push it to a new height)。

杜拉拉是外企职场女性(a white collar in a foreign enterprise)，并没什么特殊背景(with no special family background)，完全是靠自己的努力取得了成功(to have achieved success on her own/through her own efforts)。

Don’t add more pressure. Forget about turning lemons into lemonade.
Don’t add more pressure. Forget about turning lemons into lemonade. The first rule to follow when trying to turn around a bad day is to not try to turn around a bad day — that’s nearly impossible and puts way too much pressure on you. Your goal should be to survive the day and minimize the long-term damage by agreeing not to make any decisions. After a barrage of bad news, your decision making ability will be all messed up. Take a break and, if possible, escape…

The top 25 is dominated by California, with No. 1 being Newport Beach, Calif. As the article says: ‘After you land that date with a wealthy surfer, take a romantic gondola cruise-or better yet-shop for yachts which are plentiful here.’

Newton, Mass., a wealthy suburb of Boston, ranked second, since it apparently has good pizza and beer, while nearby Brookline came in third, followed by Sandy Springs, Ga., Irvine, Calif. and Milpitas, Calif., and loads of other California coastal towns。

In creating the rankings, Money looked at the percentage of the population that is single and the median income. High numbers for both made for a high ranking in the list. Nearly a third of Newport Beach’s population is single, and the median income is $144,000.

But before the golddiggers start trolling the Newport Beach Craigslist sites for well-bankrolled mates, consider this: high-income towns don’t always equate to great wealth. It just means they are expensive。

Earning $144,000 in Newport Beach may be affluent in many towns in the U.S.. But it probably counts as middle-class or lower-affluent in Newport Beach。

What is more, the prevalence of couples who live together but aren’t married may also distort the results, creating higher numbers of ’singles’ in the stats who aren’t really singles。

When asked by the Mercury News about the rich singles in Santa Cruz (ranked No. 25) resident Katy Oursler said, ‘I can afford to live here, that’s something.’

What town do you think is the best to find truly rich singles?

　　2. Don’t Skimp on This Calorie-Free Calorie Burner

Water may be the furthest thing from your mind when you’re busy. But not drinking enough of the clear stuff can have dire consequences – even for your waistline!

　　3. Don’t Eat if You’re Not Hungry

A lot of people overeat simply because the food is readily available. So get rid of the visual cues!

4 Don’t Eat Too Much Saturated Fat

High amounts of saturated fats are found in animal products such as beef, milk, cheese, lunch meat, butter and bacon。

According to the Telegraph, women reach the peak of their beauty at the age of 31, a new study has claimed。

Women in their late 20s and early 30s are considered more attractive than fresh-faced eighteen and nineteen year olds, researchers found. The findings, from a survey of the opinions of over 2,000 men and women, found that beauty was as much rooted in personality as appearance。

Celebrities currently at the prime age of 31 include TV presenter Christine Bleakley, Strictly Come Dancing judge Alesha Dixon and Danielle Lineker。

Beauty was defined as being confident by 70 percent of respondents, having good looks by 67 per cent and being stylish by 47 percent。

So I was at the beach over the weekend, and I got to thinking about several years back when The Beer Drinker, myself and a handful of our good friends went camping near a beach where you could bring a cooler and drink all the beer you wanted right there by the surf。

Nearly a third of women are the main breadwinners in their household, according to a major survey。

Thirty percent earn more than their partners and a further 19 percent earn the same amount。

Researchers said that in many relationships it was no longer assumed that the man would bring in the bigger income, especially in a time of widespread redundancies。

In a significant shift in attitudes, four out of ten women said that the career of whichever partner had the highest income would take precedence in the relationship。

In one in ten families, a house husband looks after the children and does the chores while their female partner works full time。

Ten percent of women admitted this role reversal had put strains on their relationship and some said it had even led to them parting company。

The Women and Work Survey 2010, commissioned by Grazia magazine, found that almost half of full-time mothers disliked not earning their own money。

And two thirds of the mothers among the 2,000 women in the survey said they wanted to keep working in some way after having children。

A slightly higher number of those with children under three said they would prefer to work – preferably part-time – rather than stay at home。

Victoria Harper of Grazia said: ‘Women are getting good jobs when they graduate, and working up the career ladder faster than they have ever done。

’This means that there has to be more fluidity between the roles of men and women in a relationship and when they have children。

’Instead of the have-it-all woman who tries to do everything, we are now seeing cross-over couples who share roles.’

As Germany wiltsin swelteringtemperatures, a manager in a Berlin government office told his 260 sweating workers to go home, a newspaper reported Friday, undermining Germans’ reputation for efficiency.

According to the BZ local tabloid, the boss of the Berlin office for tax evasion investigations sent an email to his employees saying: “Everyone should decide for themselves if they feel up toworking in these temperatures.”

“This decision should be taken before you pass out… taking time off work today could in many cases be a wise decision which would have my full understanding,” wrote Erik Schliephake in the email printed by BZ.

“With greetings bathed in sweat,” the boss signed offthe note.

The BZ carried the story on its front page with the headline: “Whoever sweats gets to go home.”

Berliners have been baking in a seemingly relentless heatwave in recent weeks, with the mercury frequently soaring into the high 30s Celsius (high 90s Fahrenheit) and July on course to be the hottest on record.

Vocabulary:

wilt: to become weak or tired（变得委靡不振；发蔫；变得又累又乏）

sweltering: 闷热的

tabloid: a newspaper with small pages (usually half the size of those in larger papers).Tabloids usually have short articles and a lot of pictures and stories about famous people, and are thought of as less serious than other newspapers.

pass out: to lose consciousness（昏迷；失去知觉）

sign off: to end a letter（结束写信）

Self-bombing terrorists don’t just exist among humans, as ants too commit suicide in a very dramatic way while taking others out with them, according to an ecologist Mark Moffett。

In his new book Adventures Among Ants, Moffett describes and shows how some ants will commit suicide in a very dramatic way while taking others out with them. Just before this picture was snapped in Borneo, Moffett had set a trap at the base of a tree colonized by cylindricus ants. The trap was simply some honey that he drizzled around the tree trunk。

He describes what happened next: “After an hour, weaver ants along with another species of carpenter ants located the bait and started arriving at the cylindricus-occupied tree. One of them started up the trunk, but then came down again. Another climbed a bit higher and attempted to walk by a cylindricus minor worker. Just as I clicked the shutter there was a splash of yellow, and both ants were immobilized in a sticky, grotesque tableau.”

Moffett also describes a Brazilian species that kills entire ant nests at a time。

”Up to eight sacrificial individuals stay outside at night to seal the entrance with sand, kicking the final grains in place until no trace of the hole is visible. Walled off from their sisters, by dawn almost all are dead, for reasons unknown—perhaps the squad consists of the old or sick. The ants in the nest then clear the passage to begin the day’s foraging. That night, more victims seal the door.”

To understand such behavior, Moffett suggests that we think of an ant colony like a single organism. Cutting off a “minor” part may help to save the colony as a whole. “The larger the colony, the less consequential the casualty,” he said。

Seven-years has traditionally been the time when love and affection give way to disillusion and disappointment。

But couples who manage to survive the seven-year itch would be wise not to get complacent。

The biggest threat to modern marriages actually comes from the 12-year itch, research has revealed。

The majority of couples who divorce have now spent more than a decade together before going their separate ways。

And they are increasingly likely to cite ‘growing apart’ or ‘falling out of love’ as the cause of their split。

There has been a four-fold increase in couples breaking up for these reasons in the last two years, amid increasing financial strain on families。

But infidelity is still responsible for more than a quarter of divorces. The seven-year itch – or the theory that adultery becomes impossible to resist after seven years – got its name from the 1950s film starring Marilyn Monroe。

The study by the Grant Thornton accountancy group, which was based on a survey of 90 of the country’s biggest family law firms, echoed figures released last year which showed that marriages are most likely to fall apart around the 12-year mark。

Sally Longworth, of Grant Thornton’s Forensic and Investigation Services, said: ‘This rather dispels the age-old myth about marriages failing after seven years。

’It is impossible to put any scientific reasoning on why certain marriages succeed and others fail.’

The Chinese adage has it that one should be born in Suzhou, live in Hangzhou, eat in Guangzhou and die in Liuzhou. Actually, suggests a new study: London may be the place to die。

China is near the bottom of a 40-country “Quality of Death” index ranking nations by the care provided to those late in life, published by the Economist Intelligence Unit and commissioned by Lien Foundation. At the top of the index is the United Kingdom, followed by Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. Those nations score well on indicators such as public awareness, training availability, access to painkillers and the heavily weighted category of doctor-patient transparency。

Globally, average ages will continue rising, particularly in rich countries. But filling out the bottom ranks of the Quality of Death index were the populous, fast-growing BRIC countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China, along with Uganda and Mexico. “Death and dying are stigmatized in some cultures to the point where they are taboo – as in Chinese culture.”

With doctor-patient transparency contributing 40 percent of the overall index score, it isn’t hard to see why China would do poorly. In China, it isn’t uncommon for doctors, often in cahoots with families, to lie in the face of a terminal illness to a patient about his chances, out of fear the truth would be too upsetting, to avoid his calls to continue with costly treatments and even to avoid association with spirits of the afterlife。

China has virtually no discussion of end-of-life care, such as hospice, according to the study. “Most family members of the patients can’t fully understand it,” says Ma Ke, director of the Third People’s Hospital of Kunming Hospice Department, in the study. (The report says around 30 hospitals in China offer hospice care。)

But in addition to traditions about death, China’s one-child policy may be worsening things for the roughly 9.38 million Chinese who die each year, or just over 0.7 percent of the population. (2008 figures) “The ratio of working people to dependents is shrinking rapidly, particularly in China, where the one-child policy will leave parents with fewer offspring to care for them in old age,” the report says。
