Remember ‘The Karate Kid’ with Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita? Get ready for a remake with 11-year-old Jaden Smith (Will Smith’s son) and Jackie Chan.
The original 1984 movie, which co-starred Elisabeth Shue, told the story of a martial arts underdog named Daniel (Macchio) who moves to Los Angeles from New Jersey and learns discipline and fighting skills from handyman/mentor Mr. Miyagi (Morita). The movie was basically the Yoda/Luke Skywalker story with karate kicks instead of light sabers, and a lot of ‘Rocky’ thrown in. The iconic moment in the movie is the famous ‘Crane Kick’ stance, where Macchio stands on one leg, arms raised, to combat an opponent. Speakeasy isn’t sure if that’s a real martial arts move or not, but it should be.
You might not think a popcorny flick like ‘The Karate Kid,’ which spawned several sequels, would get within several light-years of Oscar talk, but the movie has some surprising Academy Award connections. Morita was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his part in the film (he lost to Haing S. Ngor in ‘The Killing Fields’). And Hilary Swank, who starred in the 1994 spin-off ‘The Next Karate Kid,’ went on to win two Oscars. Not for that role, but still.
The coming ‘Karate Kid,’ due out next year, is set in Beijing. The change in locale is telling-karate is popularly associated with Japan. But in the 1980s, around when the first film was made, Japan was hot economically. Now China is asserting itself more on the global stage, and it’s taking ‘The Karate Kid’ franchise with it. (Could a ‘Godzilla’ movie set in Shanghai be far behind?)
史密斯此前还曾演过《地球停转日》(The Day the Earth Stood Still)新版和《当幸福来敲门》(The Pursuit of Happyness)。
Chan will play the role of the martial arts instructor and Smith, who previously appeared in the remake of ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still,’ and ‘The Pursuit of Happyness,’ plays the Karate Kid. The new Kid has been renamed Dre, but from the trailer, the story’s theme of learning focus and discipline hasn’t changed. And the movie still has echoes of a certain George Lucas sci-fi franchise. ‘It’s like ‘Star Wars.’ You’re Yoda and I’m like a Jedi,’ says Smith in the trailer.
